Improving school nutrition

Named the CSFSA Legislator of the Year for his work to improve school nutrition, Leland Yee understands that the consumption of high-fat, high-calories foods in our schools has created a health epidemic for California's children. Nationwide, the percentage of children and adolescents who are overweight has tripled in the past thirty years. In California, roughly one in four 5th, 7th and 9th graders is overweight.

    Wrote legislation to raise nutritional standards of food served on campus by non-school organizations

  • Healthy Alternatives for Students
    Helped limit the sale of sugared drinks in primary and intermediate schools and require schools to provide healthy alternatives for students

  • Landmark School Nutrition Law
    Voted for landmark legislation that requires elementary schools to reduce the allowable fat, sugar and calorie content of school meals
