Defending our Coastline

A representative for a district with more than ten miles of coastline, Leland Yee has been a strong voice for protecting the coast, beaches and San Francisco Bay. His proven track record has earned him 100% ratings from key environmental groups throughout the state.

  • Offshore Oil Drilling.
    Authored and passed statewide resolution declaring California's opposition to efforts by Republican Congressman Richard Pombo and the Bush administration to re-open California's coastline to offshore oil drilling

  • Devil's Slide Tunnel.
    Moved key legislation to build the Devil's Slide Tunnel along Highway 1, which avoided an alternate highway project that would have paved over a pristine coastal creek

  • Protecting San Francisco Bay.
    Supported San Francisco Charter Amendment requiring voter approval before any public project, such as SFO expansion, is allowed to fill 100 acres or more of San Francisco Bay

  • Coastal Litter.
    Introduced legislation to clean up the state's beaches from the estimated 4.5 trillion cigarette butts littered there each year

  • Coastal Contamination.
    Joined fellow legislators from the Bay Area to raise environmental standards and fight microbiological contamination in and around San Francisco Bay

  • Oil Spills and Ship Pollution.
    Helped pass anti-dumping legislation that bans large ships from releasing polluting materials into state waters and voted to require all oil produced from offshore facilities to be brought ashore by pipeline instead of much more dangerous barges
